We recently had the privilege of helping a walk-in client who came to us in a tough situation.
They had an important wedding to attend, but their shoulder-length hair had become severely matted over time. With care, teamwork, and several hours of dedicated work from multiple stylists (Kam, Leahnna, Kristan, and Siobhan), we were able to restore their hair - and their confidence! Here's what they had to say:
"Welcoming, family friendly environment for top notch professional hair & beauty care with unrivaled customer service. I called and arrived at the studio as a new client with what was a considerable logistical and technical challenge, prior to a wedding. Initial expectations (based on the uniquely difficult request) were that it would not be possible at all or only partially complete at best. Imagine the surprise when the K Bella team not only completed the request, but far exceeded all expectations including very practical and informative follow-up guidance. Moreover the degree of professionalism and customer service at K Bella Hair Studio & Spa is among the best I've experienced at any business."

We know this can happen to anyone, so we’re sharing the at-home routine we recommend to prevent hair from matting again. These tips are easy to follow and great for maintaining healthy, manageable hair.
Why Does Hair Get Matted?
Matted hair forms when strands become dry, neglected, or tangled over time. Wetting already-matted hair can make the knots tighter and harder to remove. Prevention is key - and it starts with consistency.
1. Build a Brushing Routine (This Is the Most Important Step!)
Brush your hair 2–3 times per day, every single day.
- Use a detangling brush or wide-tooth comb (we recommend a Wet Brush).
- Start at the ends and slowly work your way up in small sections.
- If your hair is dry or knotty, apply a leave-in conditioner or detangling spray before brushing

2. Keep a Consistent Wash Routine
How often you wash depends on how quickly your scalp gets oily.
- Alternate between a clarifying shampoo and a smoothing shampoo.
- Shampoo until it lathers well, then rinse and repeat.
- Use a moisturizing conditioner, leaving it in for 3–5 minutes.
- While conditioning, detangle gently with fingers or a comb in the shower.
Tip: If your scalp feels oily quickly, wash more often. If it stays clean, you can stretch it out for a few days.
3. Hydration Is Key to Healthy Hair
Dry hair mats faster. Keep it moisturized!
- After washing, apply a leave-in conditioner to damp hair and comb through.
- For added moisture, apply a small amount of light oil (like argan, jojoba, or coconut) to the ends.
4. Protect Your Hair While You Sleep
Never sleep with your hair loose.
- Secure it in a loose braid, low ponytail, or bun before bed.
- Use a satin pillowcase, bonnet, or durag to reduce friction and prevent tangles. (Cotton pillowcases can actually cause knots!)
5. Low-Maintenance Styles for Men
If you’re growing your hair out, protective styles can help avoid daily tangles:
- Try loose braids, twists, or a relaxed man bun.
- Avoid styles that pull tightly on the scalp to prevent breakage or traction alopecia.
What to Avoid
- Going days without brushing or combing
- Brushing dry, tangled hair without adding moisture
- Ignoring small knots - they grow fast and become harder to fix
Recommended Tools & Products
- Wide-tooth comb or detangling brush
- Leave-in conditioner or detangling spray
- Moisturizing, sulfate-free shampoo & conditioner
- Lightweight hair oil (argan, jojoba, coconut)
- Satin pillowcase or sleep cap
Bonus Tip: Beard Care Counts, Too!
Many of these same tips apply to beard grooming - daily brushing, moisture, and protection will keep facial hair soft and tangle-free.
